TRT requires a prescription

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a prescription medication in the United States. It is illegal to obtain TRT without a valid prescription from a licensed physician. No content on TRT Guide should be interpreted as instructions to obtain TRT without a prescription.

Consult a licensed physician

Before starting, changing, or stopping any medication — including TRT, HCG, anastrozole, or any other hormone therapy — you should consult a licensed physician. This is especially important if you have a history of:

  • Heart disease, stroke, or blood clots
  • Prostate cancer or elevated PSA levels
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Sleep apnea
  • Low testosterone from pituitary or hypothalamic disease

Side effects and risks

TRT carries known risks including:

  • Increased risk of blood clots and cardiovascular events
  • Elevated hematocrit levels
  • Infertility and testicular atrophy
  • Prostate enlargement and potential PSA elevation
  • Acne, hair loss, and gynecomastia
  • Sleep disturbances and mood changes

These risks are not presented as a complete list. Discuss all risks with your prescribing physician before beginning TRT.

Lab work is mandatory

TRT should only be initiated after a full blood panel — including total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, SHBG, LH, FSH, CBC, and metabolic panel — has been reviewed by a licensed physician. Never begin TRT based on symptoms alone.

What we do

TRT Guide reviews online TRT clinics and provides pricing, service, and quality comparisons. We do not recommend specific TRT protocols, dosing strategies, or lab testing schedules. Those decisions belong to you and your physician.
